New Holiday Celebrates Car Collectors
The United States Senate is known for making declarations of war and performing all sorts of other crucial political functions, among these the establishment of holidays. A recent choice for a holiday has many in the US raising any eyebrow: Collector Car Appreciation Day. The first celebration will take place on July 9, 2010 and is intended to recognize that the collecting and restoring of classic cars and their historic predecessors has played an important role in the cultural heritage and achievements in technology that the US has enjoyed in its comparatively brief history as a nation. The holiday was passed through as Senate Resolution 513. The resolution goes so far as to encourage federal entities such as the Department of Education and the Department of Transportation to work at supporting commemorative opportunities and events which is to include activities for young people such as educational exhibitions.
The president of the Specialty Equipment Market Association explained that his group asked the Senate for the resolution as a way to celebrate the car collecting hobby. The law will only be good for this year, but if it catches on then it could become a permanent fixture on the US calendar. Senators from the states of Montana and North Carolina approved the bill, each from different political parties, but both also members of the Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus which was another idea generated by the SEMA group. This is the second attempt to create such a holiday, the last one known as Senate Resolution 97 having died on the floor of the Judiciary Committee.
